The Guinness “Greatest of the Streets” Essequibo Zone championship was successfully retained by the Supenaam All Stars on Sunday night in an exciting finale at the Anna Regina Tarmac, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
In the final, the eventual victors defeated Shooter 4-0. The All Stars’ standout shooters were Nicholas McArthur and Devin Padmore, who each scored a brace in the championship match.
All Stars defeated Ballers 2-0 earlier in the evening to secure their place in the championship game. Conversely, the Shooters defeated the Road Runners 3-1, securing their spot in the finals.
Ballers secured the final podium spot by winning the third-place play-offs.
Ballers defeated Rising Stars 5-0, Shooters easily defeated Henrietta Veterans 4-0, Road Runners defeated Dominators by penalty shootout, and All Stars defeated Notorious 4-0 in the quarterfinals.
Supenaam All Stars, the overall winners, took home a trophy and a $400,000 grand prize, while Shooters took home a $250,000 award and a comparable honor. Ballers took home the $100,000 cash award for third place.
Supenaam All Stars defeated Capoey Lakers 11-2 on the first night of the competition to move on to the quarterfinals.
Ballers defeated Jaguars 4-1, Next Entertainment easily defeated Rising Stars 2-0, Road Runners defeated Police 4-0, and Shooters defeated Trailblazers by a similar score.
After regulation time finished in a draw between the two teams, Henrietta Veterans had to travel the long way to the quarterfinals, defeating Street Villains via penalty kicks.
Notorious thrashed Charity Extreme 4-0 to end the opening night of action in Essequibo on Saturday, while Dominators “dominated” Bomb Squad 3-0 to advance.
Banks DIH Essequibo Branch Manager Lalbachan Narine, Brand Manager Jeoff Clement, Outdoor Staff Ravin Kissoonlall and Coordinator Damien Fortune were on hand in the Cinderella County to present prizes to the victorious teams.
The Guinness-powered street football competition now moves to Linden for their leg of the championship next month; having already concluded Zone competitions in Berbice and now, Essequibo.
