Slingerz FC Makes Bold Moves for GFF Elite League Glory with New Coach and Key Signings

Aiming to clinch this season’s Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League title and elevate their presence on both the regional and international football stages, Slingerz Football Club has made a powerful statement with a series of strategic moves, including high-profile signings and a new leadership direction.

The club’s most notable addition is the appointment of former Guyana national team coach, Jamaal Shabazz, as Technical Director and Head Coach.

Founded in 2013, Slingerz FC quickly became one of Guyana’s top football clubs, winning the inaugural GFF Elite League. Although their rise was temporarily halted by a controversial suspension from the GFF in 2017, the club has since returned with a renewed determination to dominate the local scene.

Despite an undefeated season last year, Slingerz FC finished as runners-up to Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC. Now, the club is making decisive moves to ensure it takes the top spot in future campaigns.

At a press conference held at the National Racquet Centre, Slingerz FC president Javed Ali reaffirmed the club’s commitment to excellence, saying, “We are focused on building a team that excels on the field and represents the values of hard work, unity, and resilience.”

Ali expressed confidence in Coach Shabazz, stating, “With his extensive experience and leadership, Coach Shabazz has a proven track record of developing talent and achieving results. We are certain that under his guidance, Slingerz FC will reach new heights.”

Shabazz, a respected figure in Caribbean football who recently stepped down as head coach of the Golden Jaguars, Guyana’s national team, revealed that he chose Slingerz FC over other offers from national teams across the region. “Winning the league is my top priority,” Shabazz said, adding, “I want to build a brand with Slingerz that will set the standard for Caribbean football.”

In addition to strengthening their coaching staff, Slingerz FC has bolstered its squad with several exciting signings. The most notable of these is Kelsey Benjamin, a former GDF FC forward who helped secure back-to-back league titles with his previous club. “Kelsey’s skill and determination will be vital for our success,” said Ali.

Benjamin, eager for the challenge, stated, “I’m excited to win the league with Slingerz FC, just as I did with GDF FC.”

Another key addition is Terique Mohammed, a former Canada U20 international and experienced defender who has played in the USL Championship and Canadian Premier League. He also represented the Golden Jaguars in two matches against Trinidad and Tobago last year. Ali emphasized, “Terique brings invaluable international experience, and we look forward to seeing him perform for Slingerz.”

The club also welcomes back Jamaican midfielder Kemar Beckford, who returns after a spell with Humble Lions FC in Jamaica. Beckford’s energy and playmaking ability are expected to make a significant impact on the squad once again.

With these high-profile signings and the leadership of Coach Shabazz, Slingerz FC has sent a clear message that they are ready to reclaim their position as the top force in Guyanese football.

“We are building something special at Slingerz FC, and with our new signings and the leadership of Coach Shabazz, we are excited about the future,” said Ali. “I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Coach Shabazz, our new players, and our dedicated supporters. Together, we will strive for greatness. One Slingerz!”

With a strengthened squad and a clear vision for success, Slingerz FC is poised for an exciting season ahead, with their sights firmly set on lifting the GFF Elite League trophy once again and extending their influence beyond Guyana’s borders.
