The Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) and its rising star, Ken Harvey, were the standout performers at the recently concluded Pepsi/Michael Parris U-16 Tournament, held at the Andrew “Six Head” Lewis Gym. Hosted by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), the event showcased the best in youthful boxing talent, fierce competition, and the promising future of Guyanese boxing.
Ken Harvey, the homegrown boxer, impressed with a flawless performance, earning the prestigious title of Best Boxer after dominating Khumda Alexander from P&P Boxing Gym. Harvey’s ring skills—combining swift combinations, precise footwork, and solid defense—were on full display as he outpointed Alexander for a well-earned decision victory. His tactical excellence and relentless aggression kept his opponent on the backfoot, sealing his place as the tournament’s top performer.
Harvey’s triumph also reflected the exceptional coaching of Lennox Daniel, who was named Best Coach of the tournament. Under Daniel’s guidance, Harvey and his teammates showcased the technical prowess and discipline that have become synonymous with ALBG’s training methods.
The Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym didn’t stop there, as it also claimed the Best Gym award, solidifying its reputation as a powerhouse in Guyanese amateur boxing. This win highlighted ALBG’s ongoing commitment to nurturing young talent and producing fighters who can excel under pressure.
Meanwhile, the Rose Hall Jammers Boxing Gym made a strong showing, taking home the title of Runner-up Gym, reflecting its dedication to developing the next generation of boxing champions in Guyana.
Named in honor of Guyana’s only Olympic medalist, Michael Parris, the tournament continues to be a vital platform for young boxers to showcase their skills and ambition. This year’s event was an exciting mix of sharp jabs, powerful hooks, and strategic brilliance, underscoring the growing talent within Guyanese boxing.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle confirmed that this U-16 tournament is just the first of 24 planned for the year, signaling a bright future for boxing in Guyana. With rising stars like Ken Harvey and strong gyms like ALBG leading the charge, Guyana’s boxing legacy is in capable hands.
The weekend’s events not only celebrated individual achievements but also underscored the importance of grassroots development in boxing. As the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym and its fighters continue to rise, the future of Guyanese boxing has never looked brighter.
