The uptake of physical education in secondary schools — a major initiative championed by the Honourable Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand — is showing incredible results as this year’s CSEC Physical Education examinations roll around.
Secondary schools across the country have been including golf as one of their three sports, but interestingly, more and more learners are opting to use golf as their elective.
This was evident in today’s moderation at the Nexgen Golf Academy, where Rosignol Secondary School, for the fourth year in a row, posted the highest number of learners taking golf as their elective, with all 71 students doing so.
The program, launched by the Ministry of Education in 2021 in partnership with the Guyana Golf Association and Nexgen Golf Academy, has grown steadily year after year. Starting with just 116 students, over 400 learners will take golf in 2025 — more than the entire Caribbean region combined.
According to the Honourable Minister, “This proves that our learners are capable and willing to engage in physical education, and we are excited about the trend that is taking place. Our mandate is that every child must have access to a sport during their formative years, and I am extremely pleased to see the uptake in golf.”
Learners from Anna Regina, Abram Zuil, Berbice Educational High, Berbice High, Bushlot, Friendship Secondary, Queen’s College, President’s College, and Tucville Secondary have all submitted candidates this year for golf, and it is expected that in 2026, more than 1,000 students will choose golf as their elective!
Of even greater interest, more than 62% of the participants are female — a demographic that traditionally has been difficult to engage in physical education.(Ministry of Education)
