Eight officials, including Aubrey Hutson, will contest Sunday’s Athletics Association of Guyana’s (AAG) highly anticipated Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Elections.

With the local athletics community eagerly awaiting the outcome, the elections are expected to be one of the most closely watched in recent history.

Incumbent president, Hutson, is seeking a fourth consecutive term after first assuming office in 2013.

Hutson’s tenure has been marked by both significant achievements and controversies. Under his leadership, Guyana’s track and field athletes have made notable strides on the regional and international stage.

However, his administration also faced criticism, especially following the administrative mishaps during the 2023 CARIFTA Games, which led to his suspension by the AAG’s General Council.

Hutson maintains that his suspension was illegitimate, stating, “The suspension was never legal. That has always been my position…but for the smooth-running of track and field, a sport that I love dearly, I decided to step back.” The controversy surrounding his removal and eventual reinstatement remains unresolved, adding intrigue to his re-election

Known for her strong administrative skills, Hermonstine is widely respected within the athletics community and could pose a serious challenge to Hutson’s leadership, just as she did at the last elections in 2021.

A seasoned administrator, Cornel Rose has served in various capacities under Hutson’s leadership. His experience and familiarity with the AAG’s operations could make him a formidable contender.

Coach of the Police Progressive Track and Field Club, Mark Scott has also held multiple roles within the AAG over the years. His hands-on experience with athletes and administrative background makes him another strong candidate.

A Doctor of Physical Therapy and Director of the Ministry of Health’s Disability and Rehab Service, Dr. Ariane Mangar brings a unique perspective to the AAG.

Having served as Vice Chairman of the AAG’s Finance Sub-Committee and provided support to the West Indies and Guyana cricket teams, she is well-versed in both the athletic and medical aspects of sports management.

A coach and former committee member of the AAG, Kenisha Headley possesses extensive knowledge of the Association’s inner workings. Her background could serve as an asset in improving the organization’s structure and athlete support.

Coach of Super Upcoming Runners, Nial Stanton is also in the race, aiming to bring fresh ideas and strategies to the AAG’s administration.

Meanwhile, there’s a relatively unknown contending for the position of President of the AAG, Trevor Gonsalves.

While not much is known about Gonsalves’ background, his candidacy adds to the diversity of choices available to AAG members.

The upcoming elections come at a critical juncture for Guyana’s athletics scene, with increasing demands for transparency, accountability, and improved support for athletes.

As the candidates prepare to make their case to the AAG’s electorate, the focus remains on ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process.
